I don't know how these things propagate (there's grist for somebody's Ph.d dissertation), but I am fascinated to see the little flood of hot denials that this article generated.

One person wrote me one of the angriest, bitterest emails I've ever gotten, apparently to deny that he was motivated by deep, deep rage and was purely rational. It was painful to read. A lot of atheism, like a lot of faith, is closely related to trauma. These are deep and mysterious waters. I become more and more persuaded that prayer is the best response.
