I heard there is a rabbinic legend...

...that God makes sure there are a small group of Righteous People on the earth in each generation (if memory serves, the number I heard was "36") so that God would spare us all the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah for their sake. It's a lovely legend and reinforces the point of the original story and, ultimately, the point of the gospel: look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church.
